GRAMMY® Award Winner Billy Dean and Wegmans Set Up Lemonade Stands to Benefit the Little League Urban Initiative

Wegmans’ Families Squeezing their Hearts Out to Serve Up Home-made Lemonade on August 25th at Wegmans on William Street

August 21, 2006

Williamsport, PA (August 21, 2006) – Sunkist Growers and Wegmans’ employee families are joining forces to host a Sunkist “Take a Stand™” lemonade fundraiser to benefit the Little League Urban Initiative. On Friday, August 25 starting at 12:00 p.m., families in Williamsport for the Little League Baseball® World Series will be able to head over to Wegmans for their annual barbeque cookout and a chance to support the Little League charity through the purchase of a fresh-squeezed cup of lemonade. The festivities will culminate at 5 p.m. with a live concert by GRAMMY® award winning country music artist and official “Take a Stand” spokesperson Billy Dean.

The Sunkist “Take a Stand” program teaches kids, ages 7-12, entrepreneurship and philanthropy by providing free lemonade stands to help them raise money for charity through an old-fashioned lemonade sale. This year, the program has distributed more than 10,000 stands to kids across the country who have pledged to donate the proceeds from their lemonade sale to a charity of their choice.

“Wegmans is committed to working with organizations that help young people become healthy, productive, independent adults, like Sunkist and the Little League Urban Initiative” said Linda Lovejoy, Wegmans community relations manager. “The Take a Stand program, combined with the Little League games, Wegmans annual store barbecue and the Billy Dean concert is a perfect example of a community working together to achieve a common goal.”

“Sunkist’s ‘Take a Stand’ program highlights the inherent goodness of our youth,” said Robert Verloop, Vice President of Marketing for Sunkist Growers, Inc. “It gives kids a voice and a platform to talk about issues that are important to them like the Little League Urban Initiative.”

The Little League Urban Initiative provides assistance packages for eligible leagues that aid the local volunteer group with equipment acquisition, capital improvement cash grants, field development and renovation, access to Little League Baseball and Softball Education and Training programs, advocacy and networking.
