Sherman Oaks, California (August 1, 2002) -From among more than 300 applicants, 16 college students in California and Arizona have been named A. W. Bodine-Sunkist Growers Scholarship award winners for the 2002-03 school year.
Sunkist Growers is an agricultural marketing cooperative owned by more than 6,000 citrus growers in California and Arizona. The Bodine-Sunkist Growers scholarship honors the memory of Arthur W. Bodine, who was serving as a Sunkist board vice chairman at the time of his death in 1977. Bodine's son Ralph, chairman of the Sunkist board from 1986-1990, established the scholarship in 1990. Since its inception, the Bodine-Sunkist scholarship has awarded more than $480,000 to worthy students.
This year's scholarship winners, thirteen renewals and three new, are: Maria Alfaro, Lompoc, CA; Norma Arteaga, Pixley, CA; Crystal Castaneda, Gilroy, CA; Everto Espinoza, Lindsay, CA; Claudia Felix, Fillmore, CA; Fabiola Garcia, Sebastopol, CA; Maricruz Garibay, Parlier, CA; Rocio Hernandez, Fillmore, CA; Bhupinder Johl, Yuba City, CA; Homero Magana, Fillmore, CA; Alma Mejorado, Thermal, CA; Cesar Moreno, Arvin, CA; Ruben Moreno, Five Points, CA; Maria Serrano, Atwater, CA; Pankaj Sharma, Yuba City, CA and Kazong Yang, Fresno, CA.
"Many of our winners are the first in their families to ever go to college. Over the years we have seen them graduate to become great assets to their communities. We are proud to play a small part in their success," said scholarship administrator Claire Smith. "Sunkist is privileged to help these students build a solid educational foundation for their lives while at the same time honoring the memory of a great leader of the western citrus industry."
Since the scholarship was founded 12 years ago, over 260 individual awards have been presented with the number of recipients varying each year. Eligibility requirements include high academic standards, financial need, and a family or personal involvement in California or Arizona agriculture. Students may be entering any phase of their undergraduate college career, at any school, and in any field of study. Final selection is based on factors such as grade point average, College Board test scores, letters of recommendation, and an essay.
