How does one celebrate National Lemonade Day?
Well, how about by creating the world’s largest lemonade?
On August 20, National Lemonade Day 2008, Sunkist partnered with Chick-fil-A Restaurant franchise operator Arthur Greeno in Tulsa, Oklahoma to create an 839-gallon cup of lemonade, setting the world record for the World’s Largest Lemonade. Inside a huge 1,100 gallon fiberglass cup designed to resemble Chick-fil-A’s signature foam cup were 2,175 cups of sugar, 580 gallons of water, 250 pounds of ice and 11,730 Sunkist lemons that yielded 145 gallons of lemon juice.
After official measurements were taken, the contents of the record-setting lemonade cup were used to help raise funds for charity. The 1,100 gallons of lemonade supplied Sunkist ‘Take a Stand’ lemonade stands set up outside the restaurant to collect charitable donations for Little Light House, a Tulsa-based developmental center serving young children with special needs from birth through six years. The event achieved the day’s fundraising goal of $10,000 – and donations continue to flow in.
Sunkist coordinated the delivery of 108 complimentary cartons of lemons towards achieving the World’s Record. (That’s approximately 12,400 lemons.) “When Arthur approached us with the idea to pursue this ambitious goal, we were delighted to participate,” said Sarah Matejowsky, Sunkist’s Strategic Account Manager based in Raleigh, North Carolina. “His enthusiasm was contagious,” she said, “and Sunkist is very proud to be part of such an entertaining – and worthwhile – endeavor.”
“I’m extremely proud of my team for all of their hard work,” said Greeno of his World Record-setting feat. “And I owe a debt of gratitude to the local businesses and individuals who helped tremendously. The community joined together and worked in countless ways to achieve this record, as well as to raise money for a very worthwhile cause.”
Chick-fil-A, which began as a tiny Atlanta diner called the Dwarf Grill, is now the nation’s second largest quick-serve chicken restaurant chain with more than $2.65 billion in sales in 2007 and more than 1,380 locations…and a very satisfied Sunkist customer.
