Toronto (May 2009) – Coming into the home stretch, this annual promotion – a tie-in to the Canadian’s love of hockey – “is once again nearing a very successful conclusion,” said Steve McKee, senior account manager for Sunkist’s Toronto office. The January 1 through April 30 promotion teams Sunkist with the National Hockey League (NHL) to inspire healthy snacking habits.
“Our retailers love this program,” said Julie DeWolf, Sunkist’s director of retail marketing. “We launched the promotion in 2006 and it proved so popular we’ve continued it every season since.” Promotional materials feature special bags, bins and header cards to build themed displays around Sunkist and hockey – a colorful reminder that healthy activity and diet go hand-in-hand.
Sunkist also leverages the star power of NHL greats to inspire healthy habits. “We’ve developed an exclusive Upper Deck® collectible trading card series showcasing each year's top players along with useful attributes of may Sunkist varieties,” said McKee. “The All-Star players have special appeal to families active in youth sport and the trading cards encourage healthy snacking for the entire family while creating excitement when both hockey and California citrus are at their peak.
This season’s collectible trading cards feature NHL players Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins; Daniel Sedin, Vancouver Canucks; Sam Gagner, Edmonton Oilers; Mike Cammalleri, Calgary Flames; Matt Stajan, Toronto Maple Leafs; Dany Heatley, Ottawa Senators; Sergei Kostitsyn, Montreal Canadiens; Jarome Iginla, Calgary Flames; Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals, and Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens.
One of the collectible trading cards will be randomly inserted into specially-marked bags of Sunkist Navel oranges, and consumers are encouraged to collect all 10 in the star-studded series. Adding excitement this year is the chance to find 1 of 1,000 personally autographed player cards.
